Which weight-loss diet works best?

In a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, a scientific review was published that combined the findings of 48 separate weight-loss studies that included over 7,000 participants. The purpose of this review was to examine the effects of various popular diets and weight loss, and to see which worked the best for overweight and obese adults. The greatest average weight loss came from low-carbohydrate diets and low-fat diets. Differences between individual diets such as Atkins and Zone were minimal.

Comments from Dr. Thomas: For all the theories that have come and gone about what causes weight gain, it still comes down to basic math: If you consume more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. There is no way around that. As long as your calorie expenditure exceeds your calorie intake, weight loss can be achieved with any low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet.
